Once treated primarily as infrastructure\, the Chicago River has been reshaped into a civic space through design ambition\, policy decisions\, and everyday public use\, though transforming it required careful planning and collaboration. \nThis Future Fridays session brings together three of the Riverwalk’s designers\, planners\, and civic leaders to share the stories behind that transformation. The program will open with remarks from Lynn Osmond\, President and Executive Director of The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. Participants will then hear reflections from the people who made the riverfront what it is today and have the opportunity to ask questions and contribute to conversations about access\, identity\, and the future of Chicago. \nThis program is made possible by the generous support of The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and is part of the National Building Museum’s Future Cities Initiative. All materials are provided\, and no prior experience is required.  \nSchedule:   \nSession 1   \n10:00 am – Intro in Visible Vault: Open Collections Storage   \n10:15 am to 12:30 pm – Woodworking Workshop   \nSession 2   \n1:30 pm – Intro in Visible Vault: Open Collections Storage   \n1:45 to 4 pm – Woodworking Workshop   \nAbout Bruce VanSledright  \nBruce VanSledright runs VanSledright Woodworking Studio where he creates and produces unique pieces of custom furniture for clients. He has been working in wood for over 40 years. Some of his furniture pieces have been featured in Fine Woodworking magazine. He also teaches furniture-making classes\, most recently at Woodcraft of Greater Washington DC where he often collaborates with his colleague\, Carey Wheeler.   \nAbout Carey Wheeler  \nCarey Wheeler has been working with wood for the past 25 years. His illustrations have appeared in numerous publications\, books\, and journal ads. A selected collection of his work may be viewed at mohdbilbeisiart.com and has a cyber-presence on the social media networks.  \nAbout The Wave  \nReal innovation rarely follows a straight line. \nThe Wave is a research project led by Catholic University of America professor Tonya Ohnstad in collaboration with architecture students and industry partners. The project makes visible the iterative\, rarely explored relationship between scholarship\, construction\, materiality\, and design. The future of space frame technology—seen in the full-scale structure overhead and in the elements displayed at ground level—is investigated through months of design studies\, structural modeling\, materials testing\, and collaboration among students\, faculty\, engineers\, fabricators\, and museum staff. \nThe prototype structure at ground level and the exhibition materials displayed inside a geodesic dome explore an innovative hybrid system: a patent-pending aluminum strut reinforced internally with a cable tendon. Combining compression and tension within a single rod allows the material to work more efficiently—stronger\, lighter\, and smarter. Aluminum was chosen for its light weight\, recyclability\, and enormous potential for future construction. At roughly one quarter of the weight of steel\, aluminum reveals where innovation matters most: at the connections. The challenges encountered were not with the material or the concept\, but with the precision required at the joints—a frontier to be explored further. \nThe full-scale Wave structure overhead is constructed from steel\, a material better suited for a public installation where predictability and durability are essential. The material choices reflect context: aluminum for exploration and innovation\, and steel for demonstration and performance. While the design team pivoted to a more traditional space frame material and assembly\, the new structural logic could one day be realized in materials like titanium for aerospace applications\, or through emerging fabrication methods we are only beginning to imagine. \nThe Wave project embraces innovation as a process—one where learning comes not only from success\, but from testing architectural ideas against the realities of fabrication\, assembly\, and use. \nThis program is made possible with support from our VISIBLE VAULT sponsors\, the Institute of Museum and Library Services\, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, Formica Corporation\, Ken and Ginny Grunley Family Trust\, Beverly A. Sign up for a chance to tell a story or sit back and enjoy the show! Tonight’s theme is CHANGE MAKERS. \nCHANGE MAKERS prepare five-minute story of change. The power of rebellion\, renewal\, or ridding a system of evil. Either macro or micro\, tell us about a moment of complete transformation\, progression\, regression. A call to arms or a call to action\, share a story of change\, courage\, and the power of resistance. \nWe want to hear about the times you stood up\, showed up\, or spoke out for your city\, your neighborhood\, or community. Whether you rallied neighbors to save a park\, canvassed for a cause\, or spoke up at a tense town hall meeting. Organizing\, protesting\, volunteering\, or simply refusing to stay silent\, tell us about the times where you discovered you had the power to make change. \nThis is about the heart of the city and the heart it takes to change it. Share moments of resilience\, rebellion\, and everyday heroism: participating in a demonstration\, planting a tree\, saving a historic landmark\, reimagining a block\, rebuilding after disaster\, or rallying a community to demand change. We want to hear about the courage\, grit\, and persistence that shape the future of our built environment. \nProgram Schedule\nDoors Open at 6pm\nShow Starts at 7pm \nExhibitions on the first floor will be open from 6 to 7pm. \nHow it Works  \nWhen the doors open\, storyteller hopefuls put their names in The Moth “hat.” A half hour later\, names are picked\, and one by one\, storytellers take the stage. The ten featured stories are scored by teams of judges selected from the audience. Each StorySLAM generates a StorySLAM winner. After ten SLAMs\, the winners face off in a GrandSLAM Championship. Come sign up to tell a story or just enjoy the show!  \nSeating is not guaranteed and is available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Please be sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before the show. Admission is not guaranteed for late arrivals. All sales final. We will not be selling any tickets at the door. \nA special thank you to our sponsors Amazon\, Room & Board\, and Capital One.
